At Alvechurch Middle School in Computing we try to develop ‘thinkers of tomorrow’ through a modern, creative, and relevant Computing curriculum. Pupils are equipped to use computational thinking and creativity that enables them to become active participants in the digital world. It is important to us that pupils understand how to use the ever-changing technology to express themselves, as tools for learning and as a means to drive their generation forward into the future.

The Computing curriculum at Alvechurch is set to challenge and has been developed to inspire pupils to be leaders in our ever-changing digital world. Our pupils are taught a curriculum using research led computing pedagogies that cover all three strands of the curriculum:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Literacy – including online safety

What is distinctive about Computing at Alvechurch C of E Middle School:

Pupils gain a deep, long-term, secure, and varying understanding of the subject, being taught by teachers who inspire and enthuse

Pupils are supported to apply their learning to new situations in unfamiliar contexts and to problem-solve using technology and knowledge

Pupils are supported to develop as respectful, responsible, and confident users of technology, aware of measures that can be taken to keep themselves and others safe online

Curriculum content is specially designed for our students in response to their interests, skills and talents

A wealth of access to technology that has embedded use across the curriculum, including two ICT suite, 3 sets of laptops and Micro:bits

Embedded throughout lessons is the constant link to careers and how ICT is developing in society with consideration of the impact it may have on us and others in the wider world.

A curriculum that is designed to develop a broad and deep knowledge alongside opportunities to apply skills in various digital contexts

We give pupils the opportunity to apply and develop what they have learnt across wider learning in the curriculum.

The Curriculum Journey for every pupil in Computing looks like this:

How can you support your child in Computing?

Pupils will discuss what is and is not appropriate to post online. It is always helpful when this conversation has also taken place at home. Parents should be aware of the age restrictions for different social media.
