The ethos of the art department is to create a safe environment where pupils feel supported and they are able to produce their best work. Developing confidence in different areas of the subject is key and as a department we work hard to allow the children the space to make their own creative choices as well as providing them with a solid structure to support them technically. Pupils engage in a range of topics throughout the key stage and these topics ensure there is a progression in thinking skills, development of ideas, expression and techniques in using art materials. Pupils are introduced sketchbooks starting from year 5 and use these to record a variety of tasks and as well as this they create art work at different scales. They will research different art movements and use a variety of themes on which to base their artwork. There are opportunities to explore and experiment with pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint, printing, clay and sculpture using other materials, collage and ICT.
